Get Up Kids in Asheville

Midwest indie emo legends The Get Up Kids will make their triumphant return to North Carolina on Saturday July 20th at The Grey Eagle in Asheville. The band is out on tour this summer supporting their first full length release in nearly eight years, Problems, which was released via Polyvinyl back in May.

For a band with such a rich history of blazing trails & setting standards within the genre, this time away from the band & new album cycle presents a unique chapter beginning in the TGUK world. Vocalist Matt Pryor recently remarked the new album was written with song inspiration’s coming via his own 14 year old son’s inquisitive and introverted nature that shifted to his own struggles with balancing life both at home & on the road.

Pryor spoke about that more specifically in a press release this spring, stating “… Somewhere down the line I started singing about myself—about how even when you’re playing a show to a room full of people, I can still feel anxious and isolated.” Certainly a welcomed return subject matter wise & sonically to the ever changing landscape of emotional music in the 21st century.

Formed in Kansas City in 1995, The Get Up Kids have released six albums over the last 2+ decades while being regarded as one of the most influential acts of the Midwest emo movement in the 90’s. Their second full-length album, Something to Write Home About, released in 1999, is widely considered their best release & a timeless classic of the genre.

TGUK released the first single from the new album back in March, entitled “Satellite”, with a second single coming the following month in “The Problem is Me”. Both songs embody the signature TGUK sound & subject matter with an updated, decidedly poppy & candid honesty that only comes with the natural maturation of growing up and learning more about yourself and the world around you.

Pryor spoke again in relation to the second single, saying “For me, the song is about self care. Acknowledging personal faults and trying to work on them.”

Tickets for The Get Up Kids show in Asheville are still available both online thru The Grey Eagle’s website & physically via Harvest Records in West Asheville. Doors are at 7:30pm, with music starting at 8:30pm. Direct support will be provided by Seattle indie rock outfit Great Grandpa.
